Accomplishments

1997

  • Pamela Bratsos Armstrong Memorial was organized
  • Established annual public scholarship for a student pursuing a career related to animal welfare
  • Initiated program of publicizing and promoting letter writing and petition campaigns for animal-related issues
  • Held a fund raiser auction to raise money and awareness for homeless animals and domestic violence.
  • Supporters participated in the Clothes Line Project, in support of victims/survivors of  domestic violence
  • Raised $4,000 donated to local animal shelters, educational organizations, and domestic violence awareness organizations
  • Established a scholarship for a student pursuing a career to benefit animals.
  • On-going trap/spay/neuter release program: treated 35 feral animals

1998

  • On-going trap/spay/neuter release program: treated 38 feral animals
  • Pet Adoptions: 37
  • Working in conjunction with other local humane organizations, Sheltara Humane established a hotline for animal rescue and spay/neuter referrals; received approximately 250 calls
  • Held a collection fund raiser to benefit local animal shelters; raised over $6,000
  • Collected and distributed pallets of goods and supplies  to various area shelters
  • Purchased and donated a library of books about animals and animal-related topics to a local elementary school
  • Awarded the first annual Pamela Bratsos Armstrong Memorial Scholarship to a Randolph High School student.
  • Initiated letter writing and petition campaigns which resulted in the local government appointing/joining  a committee (RASCAL) to investigate the questionable conditions and procedures of the town dog pound (Randolph Animal Shelter Committee Action League)

1999

  • On-going trap/spay/neuter release program: treated 44 feral animals
  • Pet Adoptions: 41
  • Responded to almost 300 calls on shelter hotline and requests for animal rescue & spay/neuter referrals
  • Held Pet photo contest that attracted over 100 contestants & raised over $500; donated proceeds to the Hilltop Humane Society, a local cat shelter
  • Awarded second annual Pamela Bratsos Armstrong Memorial Scholarship to a Randolph High School student.
  • Sheltara Members volunteered and appointed to the Randolph Animal Shelter Committee Action League (RASCAL)

2000

  • On-going trap/spay/neuter release program: treated 51 feral animals
  • Pet Adoptions:  54
  • Created website and joined national shelter adoption website, Petfinder.org
  • Originated and implemented a highly publicized and successful (dog) Chain-of-Good-Deeds chain mail letter campaign encouraging people to do a good deed that would benefit animals
  • Sheltara Humane collected donations of animal products for areal shelters, including Canton Dog Pound, Friends of Plymouth Pound, Hilltop Humane, Holbrook Animal Shelter & the Home for Unwanted Waifs
  • Sheltara sent monetary donation to a non-profit caring for starving horses rescued in Pennsylvania
  • Awarded the Third annual Pamela Bratsos Armstrong Memorial Scholarship  to a student pursuing a degree in Zoology
  • Processed approximately 300 calls to the hotline
  • Sheltara Members volunteered and appointed to the Randolph Animal Shelter Committee Action League (RASCAL)

2001

  • On-going trap/spay/neuter release program: treated over  47 feral animals
  • Pet Adoptions:  74
  • Maintained the Hotline for animal rescue and spay/neuter referrals; responded to  343 calls on shelter hotline
  • Held a “Muchas Gracias” t-shirt fundraiser
  • Awarded a fourth annual scholarship to a Randolph High School graduate attending Howard University for Veterinary medicine
  • Developed the Sheltara Humane web site, hosting an electronic resource link offering free and low cost Humane Educational information and materials for teachers and students
  • Sheltara Members researched, developed and submitted a 60-page report to the Randolph School Board and the Selectmen, focusing on the feasibility of developing an Animal Pound for the town of Randolph, and included research and data on the correlation between animal cruelty and crime
  • Sheltara Members volunteered and appointed to the Randolph Animal Shelter Committee Action League (RASCAL)

2002

  • Obtained non-profit 501[3][c] status and developed organization by-laws
  • On-going trap/spay/neuter release program: treated over 44 feral and 50 abandoned animals
  • Pet Adoptions: 59
  • Responded to 374 calls on shelter hotline
  • Opened and operated shelter in Mercy Cat Shelter Space; rescued, treated and found homes for over 50 animals
  • Fundraising efforts included Karaoke for Kitties, a yowling success, and T-Shirt sales
  • Paid outstanding veterinary bills for a small, struggling cat rescue
  • Awarded Fifth Annual scholarship to a Randolph resident training to be a Veterinary Technician
  • Sheltara collected food and supplies for dogs and cats living on the South Dakota Indian Reservation; diapers and holiday toys were collected for the children
  • Held yard sale fundraiser of donated items
  • Hosted Sheltara Humane informational web site

2003

  • Pet Adoptions: 63
  • Fielded over 375 calls on hotline
  • Held Karaoke for Kitties II fundraiser
  • Paid outstanding vet bills for small local cat rescue
  • Held “Santa Paws” holiday fund raiser and raised $700
  • Sheltara member initiated an on-going can/bottle collection drive, raising approx. $1,200/year
  • Awarded Sixth annual scholarship to two RHS students.
  • Sheltara held a Holiday collection drive of food and supplies for the people, dogs and cats living on the South Dakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
  • Hosted booth at the Rhode Island Pet Show and TICA Cat Show at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence Rhode Island
  • Launched successful grassroots campaign to educate people about buying products that have not been tested on animals. Sheltara gave out cruelty-free shopping guides compiled by the Ethical Science & Education Coalition
  • Participated in Holiday Gift Wrap Fundraiser at Borders Bookstore
     

2004

  • Pet Adoptions: 72
  • Responded to over 350 calls on hotline
  • Hosted Sheltara Humane informational web site
  • Awarded seventh annual Scholarship to a student from the Blue Hills Regional High School
  • Published 2004 Sheltara Digest as a fundraising tool
  • Participated in Holiday Gift Wrap Fundraiser at Borders Bookstore.
  • Collaborated with Petsmart stores in Brockton and Plymouth to set up an adoption center to showcase the cats available for adoption; Sheltara established permanent cages at the Petsmart in Brockton.
  • Awarded a grant of $1,000. to Cat Haven to open shelter annex space; space was used as a temporary holding area for feral cats awaiting and recovering from surgery for kittens awaiting homes
  • Provided medical care cost for a kitten requiring surgery to amputate her leg (see cover photo)
  • Paid over $5000.00 in various additional veterinary bills.
  • Misc. Fund raising events include tag tables at the local High School and Temple

2005

  • Pet Adoptions: 49
  • Maintaining on going hotline for animal rescue and spay/neuter referral
  • Currently selling  “Spay & Neuter” jelly bracelet to help pay outstanding vet bills
  • Yard sale summer fund raiser planned for September
  • Participated in the annual Adopt-a-thon taking place at Petsmart in Brockton
  • Currently collecting supplies for the people and animals on the Pine Ridge Lakota Reservation of Wanblee, South Dakota
  • Awarded seventh annual Scholarship to a student from the Blue Hills Regional High School
