2000 (dog) Chain Mail Letter
The 2000 fund raiser began with the following letter:
| |
Dear Friend,
The Pamela Bratsos Armstrong Memorial year 2000 event will be a "chain" of good deeds dedicated to the memory of Pamela Bratsos Armstrong. You must follow the directions of this letter. Copy it and send it to 10 other people. If you do this, you will be rewarded with the warm, fuzzy feeling that comes with helping others. If you do not...well, don't worry...there's no curse involved. We ask that you:
1. Do something nice for an animal.
Examples: collect old towels and blankets for your local shelter, spay/neuter a neighborhood cat, send a donation in Pam's memory to a humane organization, adopt a homeless pet.
2. Send us a note or e-mail telling of your act(s) of kindness.
Your responses will be compiled into a tribute list to be mailed out on Pamela's birthday, August 29th.
3. Pass this letter along to other kind- hearted folks that you know.
4. Optional, but appreciated:
Donate supplies or include a dollar or two to buy dog/cat food. Each year we deliver supplies to a local shelter on Pam's birthday.

In response to this letter, we learned of the following
Links In The Chain of Good Deeds:
Adella and Dick Bratsos donated a car, snow blower, and some garden equipment to Norfolk County Humane Society. This is a no-kill shelter in Canton MA run by Helyn Spierdows which uses donated vehicles as a fund raiser. Call 781-828-8084 to donate a used car (they will tow it away for you) or other goods.
Help Helyn out when you're trading in your old car. (If Dick could be separated from his beloved old Datsun, then you know it has to be a good cause!)
Steve & Peggy Cohen of Newtonville Pet donated palettes of dog food.
(literally, palettes!) Many thanks from hungry canines.
Noreen and Dick Criag gave a contribution to the Home for Unwanted Waifs.
This is a start-up no kill shelter on 308 Court Street in Plymouth MA. This new shelter is a labor of love by Donna Tomkiewicz , DVM - she can use everyone's support.
(Donna also does grooming and veterinary services)
Lysa Grant donated three car loads of goodies to a local shelter requesting items to sell at their fund raising yard sale. She was recruited and is now the secretary of by Waggin' Tails animal rescue in Broadheadsville, PA.
Lysa also rescued an abandoned kitty. She cleaned him up, brought him supplies and found a good home for him.
Rick Grant, Lysa's computer-guy husband designed a web site for Waggin' Tails (check it out!) and has offered his services to The Pamela Bratsos Memorial Fund. Keep a look out for our upcoming Pammy web site. (Thanks Rick!)
Lucky kitty rescued by Lysa will have his photo posted there on the future web site.
Lainie and Jack Grieco found a homeless kitty too. They had Mousetrap spayed and adopted her.
Terry and Marshall Feldman donated heaps of towels and blankets for the shelters.
Aldona and Tom Flores of Washington also donated towels to their local animal shelter.
Paula Frye's friend Linda Olsen sent us a letter about Paula's generous aid to an injured cat. Paula witnessed a cat get hit by a car. The driver drove away. Paula brought the cat to the vet and paid the $600.00 medical bill. She is adopting the lucky patient too.
A. Gabriella bought food for a local animal hospital in Worcester.
Michele Kelly came to the aid of a dog left tied to a tree at the Walmart in Avon MA.
She gave the dog some water from the "dog emergency " supplies she has in her car and alerted the manager to be sure that the dog was not abandoned there.
Evelyn La Blanc donated towels & blankets to her local animal shelter
Stacy and Steve Lander donated $500.00 to Buddy Dog Humane Society in Sudbury MA. Their generous donation will sponsor a cage for one year in Pamela's name.
Susan MacNab adopted an 8 week old kitten named Emma. Susan was the first place winner of the 1999 Pamela Bratsos Memorial fundraiser photo contest. All of the "models" were dogs that she has rescued throughout the years.
David Matyzynski found a good home for an abandoned kitten.
Berta Nalbandian rounded up blankets for the shelter animals.
Marie Natale of Worcester MA donated dog food to a local animal hospital
Trish O'Leary commissioned the building of an outdoor run for the cats at the Hilltop Humane Society. She donated the run in memory of Pamela. Trish also scooped up a little neighborhood stray and had her spayed. She is adopting her - but 8 cats is definitely her limit! (famous last words)
David Pease sent a generous donation to the Pamela Bratsos Memorial Fund and a lovely letter about Pam. Both are much appreciated.
Dolores Shea is a volunteer and on the Board of the Home for Unwanted Waifs Shelter. She is also spaying/neutering any homeless cat that comes within her radar.
Bonnetta Shaw collects "Homeless Homer" pet points from various pet food labels. The shelters can redeem them for a cash donation. Bonnie sends them to the Friends of Plymouth Pound. For info on this program call: 1-800-842-4637
Scott Shaw gave a generous donation to the Donovan School Book Builders to buy animal reference books for the library in Pamela's memory.
Cara & Steve Shaw sent a donation to Save A Dog (saveadog.com) in Framingham MA. 100% of the money donated goes to the animals (we like that!)
Judy Shaw coordinated the BJ's Wholesale in Danvers MA food donation. It was a big job (those giant bags of dog food are heavy!) but she brought in a lot of food for the animals. Judy also bought 2 stacks of new towels for the shelter animals.
Tweete26@aol.com and her sister donated needles and insulin to their local animal clinic and made a contribution there.
Michele (Nicholson) Owens made a donation in Pamela's honor to Rosie's Place, a woman's shelter in Boston MA.
Also, the following people and businesses made Cash Donations to the Pamela Bratsos Memorial Fund:
Ellen Coakley * David Pease * Kathy Cassidy * June O. Elam-Mooers * Aldona &Tom Flores * Susan MacNab * Berta Nalbandian * Ben Sedgwick * Chris & Jim Cassidy * Marion & John Tuohy * Lorraine Allen *

Kathy's Grooming (Holbrook MA) * The Corner Store (Randolph MA) * BJ's Wholesale (Danvers MA) * Newtonville Pet (Newtonville MA)
And these people and publications helped us to promote the fund raiser:
Lisa Brems - wrote an article in her Around the Towns column for the Boston Sunday Globe (July 9, 2000)
Fred Hanson - also wrote a wonderful article in support of this years' fundraiser. It was on the front page of the July 17, 2000 Patriot Ledger.
Moneysaver - listing August 16, 2000
The Randolph Buzz - listing August 17, 2000
Consumer News -listing August 24, 2000
Through your efforts,
we were able to make deliveries to 5 local shelters: Canton Dog Pound, Friends of Plymouth Pound, Hilltop Humane, Holbrook Animal Shelter & the Home for Unwanted Waifs. Among the items contributed were: blankets, towels, medical supplies, kitty litter (& litter pan), dog food, cat food, stuffed animals (toys), cages and metal crates.
Through your donations,
we sent a monetary contribution to Eileen Pisquin, 517 Hallet Road, E. Stroudsburg, PA 18301. She is caring for six starving horses rescued a few weeks ago in Pennsylvania (unfortunately, one has since died). Here's an article about the horses in the Pocono Record.
Keep your suggestions coming,
we welcome referrals of animals/shelters in need.
Many thanks to everyone who was a "link" of the good deeds chain, sent donations or gave their support. Our apologies if anyone was not listed, please a let us know so that we
can add you to the list.
We are not notified of the names of people that make donations directly to the bank. If you are one of the anonymous donors - Thank you.
