OUR FUNDRAISER RESULTS FOR 2003

Karaoke for Kitties II was held August 21st at Amvet Post #9 in Randolph. We reached the $1,000.00 mark again this year. Whether you sang, sponsored a singer, sent a donation or came to show your support…it was greatly appreciated. The winners were recipients of “Ameri-Cat Idol” awards. All was made possible by the generosity of Gail of Trull-al-la Karaoke and the Amvets Post #9. But the big winners are the cats. The donations from this fundraiser were used to pay down our vet bills.

For our on going Santa Paws fundraiser, folks who donate $20.00 or more will received the gift of a holiday ornament/frame which includes a photo of one of our shelter cats. On the back of the frame is the name of your sponsored cat and our web site address so donors can check to see if their cat was adopted. We raised $672.00 to date with this fundraiser.Special thanks to the employees at National Development, Abington Savings Bank and Sager, for their support. There are still some ornaments available.

E-mail sheltara@sheltara.org.

Can/bottle collection is an on going process. Thanks to National Development and Weymouth Woods whom allow us to collect cans at their offices. Also thanks to Ethel who has a drop off collection at her house. If anyone has any cans or bottles that they would like to donate please e-mail Laurel at Laurel@sheltara.org to arrange a pickup or drop off. Every little bit helps. We raised $76.00 to date. (Which is the cost to spay one cat!)

Every year there seems to be someone that steps up and carries the lion’s share of fund raising duties. In 2002, it was Dolores Shea and her merry clan. Other years, it has been Kathy Cassidy or Ginnie Weeks and her mother Claire (who has since passed away). And there are many, many others that we consider to be the foundation that Sheltara-Pamela Bratsos Armstrong Memorial rests on. This year, the “super cats” are our new members …Laurel and Alan Sandman. This cute couple has almost single-handedly run the Santa Paws program and greatly added to the annual fundraiser. Also Special thanks to Diane Peckham-Foulds, who has never failed to support Sheltarain a big way. Much appreciation goes to B.J.’s Wholesale Club of Danvers and Judy Shaw, for contributing goods and refreshments for ourevents. We must also send extra gratitude to Connie Johnson, Teddie Pilalas and Aldona Flores for their generosity to Sheltara.

SINCERE THANKS TO ALL THAT HAVE GIVEN THEIR SUPPORT.

SHELTARA’S MISSION

Sheltara’s goal is to provide support to non-profit shelters
and to educate and promote the humane treatment of animals

Our bills cover medical services for the shelter cats and also cats and kittens “just passing through”. Our shelter Director Wendy makes sure that kittens and cats are adopted out as healthy as possible. She also has an incentive program to assure that the kittens are spayed or neuter when they reach six months old. Sheltara has also provided financial help to individual pet owners in need. We also presented a Pamela Bratsos Armstrong Memorial scholarship to students who are pursuing a career that will benefit animals – all courtesy of Sheltara supporters.

THANK YOU!

Contributions come in so many ways in addition to financial.  Folks give old towels and blankets, save cans of pet food, give us items for yard sales, come to our events or meetings, tell other people about us and other such acts of kindness.  Thanks to you all!

A Message from Wendy,
our Cat Haven Shelter Director...
Our featured special needs pet is tiny JuJu
(Named after St. Jude the patron Saint of lost causes)

A local elementary school teacher brought little JuJu to us as an emergency case. The parents of one of her students had given the three-week-old kitten to her children to play with. When playtime was over, poor little JuJu was left with both of her back legs broken and mangled.

Usually an animal with this much damage would need to be euthanised. But JuJu’s strong will to survive was very evident to the veterinary staff and all efforts were made to save her. This little kitten was so brave! She endured numerous x-ray, bandage changes and examinations during her treatment.

And with all her discomfort, JuJu is still a happy, loving kitten. She scoots around dragging her cast to jump and play. She has a healthy appetite and uses the sandbox on her own. JuJu relishes any hugs, kisses and general fussing over that she can get.

Now she is strong enough to have the surgery required on her leg. Please help contribute to repairing JuJu’s leg so she can go on living a happy life in a new adoptive home.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please remember JuJu at the holidays. It is never wise to give a living creature as a surprise gift.

Young children should not handle small animals unattended.

The children can suffer emotionally if they unintentionally hurt the animal. And the animal certainly suffers physically if mishandled. The responsibility of caring for a baby pet is best left for older children while adult pets fare much better around human babies J
